It didn’t feel like a warm summer New England day, that was for sure, but Jacob couldn’t help his internal temperature from rising a few notches. He looked away from Ryan, sure that his friend would notice how flustered he was becoming because of the approaching man.

Jacob tried to tilt his head in another direction, hoping that Ben would get the hint and veer off to the left, avoiding him and playing things off like he was just walking to the bathroom. Ben didn’t get the hint, he was an alien, after all, so subtle cues were likely to be looked over. He stopped in front of Jacob, closer than a stranger would stand. A grin spread across the alien’s face as he held a hand out in an awkward greeting stance.

Jacob didn’t return the handshake. It was a dick move but he was so caught off guard that he didn’t really know how to react.

“I, uhm, what are you doing here?” Jacob asked.

“Thought it would be an excellent opportunity to research.”

“Research?” Ryan cut in, making himself known. He was covering his crotch with his hands.

That’s when Jacob came up with one of the fastest and most expertly crafted lies he had ever said, “He’s a sociology professor over at the community college.”

“Oh, gotcha. So did Jacob substitute for you?”

“Substitute?” Ben asked, cocking his head.

Jacob didn’t wait for Ryan to respond. “Yes, I was a sub for his class. He was out for a week with something and so I took over. We’re going to go now though, it was good seeing you, sir.” Jacob dipped his head in a quick goodbye and turned to leave but was stopped by a bubbly brunette wearing a bright green bra and a thong with an elf across the front sticking up his middle finger.

“Britney!” Ryan exclaimed from behind Jacob. “I didn’t know you’d be here.”

“Duh, after last night, I’m ready to grab life by the ears and live life to the fullest.”

“Balls,” Ryan teased. “You meant to say balls.”

“Right, duh,” she said, giggling and resting a hand on Ryan’s chest, biting her lower lip in the process.

Jacob shook his head, unable to believe the situation he was finding himself in. He knew what was coming, he could tell in the way Ryan looked at Britney.

“Hey, Jake, we’re gonna go, uh, start the race a little early. Right, Brit?”

She nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah, let’s get this race going.”

“I’ll see you later,” Jacob said, shaking his head. For a second, he was about to just continue walking, back to his car where he could drive home and drink some more to forget about all of this.

And yet he stayed. The winds picked up and carried Ben’s scent towards Jacob. It was a difficult scent to pinpoint; oaky, musk, with some flowery tones. It was powerful and before Jacob could leave, there was that damn fireball expanding in his gut again. It made him want to turn around and stare at Ben. He wanted to admire the alien, talk to him, he wanted to get to know him and explore him even more than he already had.
